Split Costs by Income

A fairer way to split rent, groceries, vacations.

When one partner earns twice as much, a 50/50 split isn’t fair — it’s just equal. The fairer move is proportional: each person pays the same percentage of their income.

Enter each person’s income and the shared cost. We’ll show what each one owes.

Frequently asked

Why not just split everything 50/50?

Equal splits feel fair on the surface but penalize the lower earner — $1,000 in rent is a much bigger share of a $40k income than a $120k one. Proportional splits use percentages of income instead of fixed shares.

Should I use gross or take-home pay?

Take-home is usually fairer because it reflects what each person actually has available to spend. We default to take-home but you can switch.
