Frequently asked

Is this the same as FIRE?

It's related. The classic FIRE rule (annual spending × 25) is one of the inputs we use. But 'rich' is a feeling as much as a math problem — we let you adjust for lifestyle, geography, and how much cushion you want.

Should I include my home?

If your plan is to live in it forever, exclude it — it doesn't generate spending money. If you'd downsize, include the gap between current value and what you'd buy next.

Why does the number feel so high?

Because the math is unforgiving. Spending forever requires a portfolio that throws off forever-income. The 4% rule says you need 25× your annual spending. Most people undershoot.
